Open Library is an online project intended to create "one web page for every book ever published". Created by Aaron Swartz, Brewster Kahle, Alexis Rossi,[6] Anand Chitipothu, and Rebecca Malamud, Open Library is a project of the Internet Archive, a nonprofit organization. It has been funded in part by grants from the California State Library and the Kahle/Austin Foundation. Open Library provides online digital copies in multiple formats, created from images of many public domains, out-of-print, and in-print books.

3. World Digital Library
Launched in 2009, the World Digital Library (WDL) was a project of the U.S. Library of Congress, with the support of UNESCO, and contributions from libraries, archives, museums, educational institutions, and international organizations around the world. The WDL sought to preserve and share some of the world’s most important cultural objects, increasing access to cultural treasures and significant historical documents to enable discovery, scholarship, and use.

After more than 10 years of operation, WDL is now celebrating its success as a worldwide collection of cross-cultural treasures by transitioning into a sustainable home for perpetual access on the Library of Congress’s main website. This transition is expected to be completed by the end of the calendar year 2021, providing a view of these resources as a coherent collection, while allowing the WDL material to benefit from ongoing enhancements to the loc.gov website.

The New York Public Library has been an essential provider of free books, information, ideas, and education for all New Yorkers for more than 100 years. Founded in 1895, NYPL is the nation’s largest public library system, featuring a unique combination of 88 neighborhood branches and four scholarly research centers, bringing together an extraordinary richness of resources and opportunities available to all.
Serving more than 17 million patrons a year, and millions more online, the Library holds more than 55 million items, from books, e-books, and DVDs to renowned research collections used by scholars from around the world. Housed in the iconic 42nd Street library and three other research centers, NYPL’s historical collections hold such treasures as Columbus’s 1493 letter announcing his discovery of the New World, George Washington’s original Farewell Address, and John Coltrane’s handwritten score of “Lover Man.”

9. Vancouver Public Library
Vancouver Public Library has been dedicated to meeting the lifelong learning, reading, and information needs of Vancouver residents for more than 100 years. Last year, VPL had nearly 6.5 million visits, with patrons borrowing nearly 9.5 million physical and digital items including books, ebooks, movies, music, and magazines. Across 21 locations, VPL is the most-visited major urban library per capita in Canada.

Did you know that library service has existed in Downey for over 100 years? That’s right. Our community’s commitment to literacy and public access to information is long-standing and well-rooted. In 1898, seven women residents of Downey founded a social club, and within three years, in 1901, they established a small library. In the beginning, they charged each patron a small fee so that books could be purchased. When, in September 1915, the Los Angeles County Library System opened a new branch in Downey, the social club turned over its entire collection to them. In the first year that the County Library System operated the library in Downey, 215 patrons were registered and 330 titles were available to choose from.

The branch would move several times under the County’s direction until, in 1950, it found its last home at the County Civic Center on Third Street and La Reina Avenue. By 1957, the branch’s 15,000 volumes circulated 123,000 times. The library also had 14,000 people register for library cards that year.

The Library was originally founded in a 300-square-foot space on the second floor of the National Commercial Bank and Trust Company in 1969. Thanks to a dedicated group of advocates, the Library has grown with the community. Our current location is a 55,000-square-foot facility, designed and built to meet the needs of our ever-growing and diversifying population.

The AADL provides services at no charge to all residents living within the Ann Arbor District Library's service area.
Library services are available to all others outside this service area for a fee. Over 8.8 million items have circulated system-wide during recent fiscal years!
