What is the Internet 

The internet is a worldwide system of computer networks that allows users anywhere to circulate information, accessible to anyone with a computer or computer-like connected device. More than 4.5 billion people have access to the internet.

How does that work? 

That's the cable? I was expecting something so much bigger. That's the internet. To get across the ocean, nearly all internet traffic has to use a cable like that one.

But now it seems we can't even function without it. Jobs require online applications. Parents around the country know that their kids can't get an adequate education without internet access.

I mean, people tweeting that they needed to be rescued and a boat came in. It's truly been life-saving. The internet has become essential to us, but a lot of us still don't know how it works.

The internet has two major components: 

  • Network protocols and hardware protocols, such as TCP/IP, or a set of rules that devices must follow to complete communication tasks. 
  • Hardware includes everything from computers, smartphones, and smart devices to cell phone towers, radio, satellite servers, and cables that transmit information.
  • The internet and the World Wide Web are often used interchangeably, but they're not the same thing. The internet is a global collection of networks, while the World Wide Web is a collection of information that can be accessed using the internet.
  • Internet is the infrastructure and the Web is a service within it. The Web is the most widely used part of the internet, providing access to billions of pages of information.
  • The internet brings us email, social media, and movie streams.
  • But it can also bring us the dark web, an encrypted portion of the internet, hidden from standard browsers. It allows users to remain completely anonymous, which can facilitate cybercrime, smuggling, and terrorism.

As more IoT devices emerge, like smart home appliances, car sensors, and tracking devices to name a few, more and more data will be created. Luckily, the most recent version of the internet, IPv6 was designed to handle the anticipated growth of the internet and the rapid expansion of IoT.

History of the Internet

This is called batch processing. Of course, this was quite ineffective. With computers getting bigger and bigger they had to be stored in special cooled rooms. But then the developers couldn't work directly on the computers anymore – specialists had to be called in to connect them.

Programming at that time meant a lot of manual work and the indirect connection to the computers led to a lot of bugs, wasting time and fraying the developers´ nerves.

The year 1957 marked a big change. A remote connection had to be installed so the developers could work directly on the computers. At the same time, the idea of time-sharing came up.

This is the first concept in computer technology to share the processing power of one computer with multiple users. On October 4th, 1957, during the Cold War the first unmanned satellite, Sputnik 1, was sent into orbit by the Soviet Union.

The fear of a "Missile Gap" emerged. In order to secure America's lead in technology, the US founded the "Defense Advanced Research Project Agency" in February 1958. At that time, knowledge was only transferred by people.
