Google Analytics

The Analytics Academy demonstrates how digital analytics can help you improve your business.

A basic understanding of Google Analytics. We’ll show you how to create and implement an account, set up views and filters, read basic reports, set up dashboards, perform basic analysis, and set up goals and campaign tracking.

To begin, let’s start by defining “digital analytics” and why it’s important. So what’s the deal with digital analytics? people usually purchase goods in stages. In marketing, we have the concept of a purchase funnel. There are different stages within the funnel that describe customer interactions.

A basic purchase funnel includes the following steps:

  • The acquisition involves building awareness and acquiring user interest
  • Behavior is when users engage with your business
  • And Conversion is when a user becomes a customer and transacts with your business.

In the offline world, this process can be hard to measure. But in the online world, we can measure many different aspects of the funnel using digital analytics. We can track what online behavior led to purchases and use that data to make informed decisions about how to reach new and existing customers. Think about an online store, such as the Google Merchandise Store.

How to set up event tracking

Event tracking is a great way to know if users are engaging with your website and performing intended actions. The Google Merchandise Store, for instance, can track clicks on the global navigation bar to better understand how users navigate their website.

To collect Event data from a website, you'll need to add JavaScript to the individual elements on the site you wish to track.  Note that you’ll have to set up separate event tracking for each element or state you wish to track.

For example, if you want to track when videos are both played and paused, you will need to set up separate event tracking for the play and pause states of the button. When a user performs an action on an element with event tracking, the event tracking code will pass four parameters along with the event hit.

List of four parameters

  • Category.
  • Action.
  • Label.
  • And Value.

You can define these parameters in your JavaScript to organize the data in your event reports.

let's talk about Google Analytics views and how to set them up and what the best practices are. Now just to give you an overview again we have the account, we have the properties, and now we are looking at the views. And best practice here is really to set them up after the master test and unfiltered.

Why is that so?

Well once you look at how Google Analytics works you'll notice that on a view level data gets processed. So you have different configurations and filters that you have set up within a view.

And once the data comes in, it goes actually through these filters, through these configurations, and then it's displayed in your reporting overview. Very important to notice once the data goes through these configurations or these filters, it can't be processed backward so you can't take off the filter or change the configurations later and apply that to the data that is already collected.
